Having "questionable" items sent from the U.S.

Likelihood that customs will open the package

So I realize that certain types of seeds are probably not allowed here... What is the likelihood that customs is going to open up a care package from my mom that has some vegetable seeds inside? I'd like to try to grow some veggies that I can't find here. wink.gif I've checked some of the U.K. seed sites, and they don't carry certain things either... only from the USA.

I've had to open up most packages I have received here in front of the guys at the zollamt...

If you have "stuff" sent TNT it will arrive unopened.
Got some stuff from the States in 3 days that way this week.

Did you try the Netherlands?

Haven't tried from NL yet... will do, thanks for the tip.

@ garibaldi: Sorry, but what is TNT??

Dynamite! Looking for squash seeds are you? I am growing some squash now.
mlovett
ANYthing other than some form of cabbage. LOL

various forms of squash, pumpkin, OKRA ("yuck", yeah, whatever, haha), cavolo nero (ok, that's sort of a cabbage), eggplant, hot peppers, artichoke??... maybe even a peanut farm. j/k

Also some of my favorite flowers that I just don't see here. I am a fan of the English cottage garden "wild" look, undoubtedly not very popular here. wink.gif

My mom will be here next month... wondering if she can smuggle some seeds in. It's the other way that's tricky... CA has very strict agriculture rules at the airport.

When I was living in Germany, I noticed that personal packages were much more likely to be opened than those direct from a company. Not that you should ask a catalogue to send you seeds direct, but I'd say the chances of having them opened as a private package are pretty good.

Get your mom to pack the seeds and bring them over that way. Much better chances of success, I'd say.

At least Okra and Calvola Nero to be found at Seeds of Italy (UK Supplier)

In the Vegetable section on the drop down menu on the left.

I have a friend who is a professional gardener, and she's been working for an old family run German seed company for years: Stoll Samen. They are now into their fourth generation. Take a look at their web site, though variety available online is a little limited as it is quite a new online store. You might instead want to order their catalogue - here's the online form. This company has been around since 1854, and is located in Gönningen near Reutlingen (where I used to live). There's even a seed museum in Gönningen which is fascinating for folks interested in seeds and history. smile.gif Gönningen holds a very nice tulip festival every year, and many folks make the trip to see the flowers every Spring.
