At the Euro Youth Hotel we are currently looking for two female bar staff to work evenings at our lively hostel bar. This is to replace two existing female employees that will be leaving us shortly.
Is this not illegal these days?
Interestingly under European Law I am allowed to advertise for FEMALE only staff for the lingerie business, because of the very specialist fact that they will be handling naked women, but does this apply to bar staff as well?

Maybe maybe not. I know that in the states the company I worked for would ask for applicants without mentioning them to be female. The company would place the applicants that were non female in a file for later. You see the company had to meet a requirement of female as well as minority employees without advertising for such. It was a tricky line to walk but the company did it. Maybe the same here.

I don't think it's illegal here. I've seen lots of adverts for regular bar and restaurant staff that specify female.

What about the models themselves?
Presumably its even more important to you that the models are female, than that the handlers are female.

That doesn't mean such adverts are legal, though. Many employers also specify a "preferred" age in their job adverts (25-35, for instance) although AFAIK discriminating on the basis of age is against EU law.

I'd guess illegal.

http://www.eoc.org.uk/default.aspx?page=15643As it is clearly illegal in the UK, just surprised this is not also the case here in Germany?

On the lingerie modelling and fitting side it is covered by these exceptions:
It is lawful to discriminate in recruitment, training, promotion and transfer in a job for which the sex of a worker is a genuine occupational qualification (GOQ). GOQs are interpreted very narrowly by the courts and can only be claimed where the work:
is restricted to one sex for reasons of physiology or authenticity
is restricted to one sex to preserve privacy and decency

According to the EU's
website it's illegal all over the Union (ref. Directive 2002/73).
QUOTE
Employers must not discriminate between men and women when recruiting workers. So, for instance, job advertising biased in favour of one sex is contrary to Community law.
However, different treatment is exceptionally permitted, under certain conditions where the gender of the workers is an essential factor in the job. If it is objectively proven that only workers of one sex can perform all the tasks related to the job, then the employer is allowed to recruit only men or only women for that job.
My German's not good enough to check for applicable laws, but it's possible that the directive hasn't been implemented here, or that it simply isn't enforced. The only country which implements and enforces every directive seems to be the UK.

Just amused that TT is normally so PC, and the mods go bananas if you post a picture of someone with their arm in the air - but allow illegal job adverts.
If I owned a bar, I would employ crumpet as well, just would be more careful when running recruitment adverts.

Crumpet is so sexist, you have to say totty now.

I prefer the gender-neutral term "eye candy", borrowed from our north American cousins.

I bet Hooters must have a nightmare trying to recruit in Germany then...

To be honest, if the guy wants a woman working there then he's going to choose a woman, regardless of how many men apply. This just saves all the guys from wasting their time.
